Give The Gift Of Glass

Holiday gift giving is upon us again. For those of us looking for a unique gift that can make a statement, there are many options. However, there are very few with the impact, style and longevity of decorative glass.  “Whether you are looking for a special gift for yourself or a friend, there are many beautiful and enduring forms of glass,” says Denny Berkery, Owner of The Vinery.  “Stained Glass has stood the test of time.  And, with unlimited choices of color and texture it will compliment any décor, whether it is traditional, architectural, scenic or contemporary.”  “Buying for others can be a bit tricky,” adds  Berkery.  “One should anticipate where the recipient might display his or her new gift.  Two things you might consider are the colors in the room that your gift might be placed and the window space if the gift is to be hung in the window.”

“Handmade artwork is always an appreciated gift.  When given, decorative glass has a timelessness that allows it to be part of the recipient's life for many years to come.  In time, it often transforms from a decoration into a fixture, and sometimes even becomes an heirloom. There is no doubt, glass is unique and can be special gift.”  Denny Berkery,The Vinery.

Decorative glass can come in many forms.  Below are Berkery’s insights into great gift options:

Stained Glass

Many stained glass studios create custom art glass for your specific needs.  You can provide a design idea or ask to view design catalogues to help you decide the line art for your panel. Once the specific design is chosen, the next step is to choose color.  mWhen it comes to color my advice to my customers is “simpler is better.” It is very difficult to use many colors and have it fit into a room.

Fused Glass

In addition to stained glass, the fused glass form has been very popular these days.  Fused glass is glass that has been melted together. It may be slumped into a bowl form, drawn into a vase, made into jewelry or used as a window hanging.  The process is dynamic and exciting. Earrings and pendants made from fused glass are eyecatching and unusual.

Glass Beads

Another area of glass that deserves mentioning is glass beads. Glass beads are created in front of a torch.  The artist melts rods of glass onto a mandrel to create one of a kind beads and pendants.  Much skill and patience go into this art form.

Glass Mosaics

Glass mosaics also make wonderful gifts. Mosaics may take the form of tabletops, flower pots, garden stakes, mirrors, garden stones and votive candle holders.  The timeless technique of mosaics dates back thousands of years.
