Sun Room Perspectives

Basic Sunroom Types:

A Three Season Sunroom is generally a framed room with solid roof and screened windows and doors. Often it has single paned glass and offers protection from sun and pests, however, not hot or cold weather.

A Four Season Sunroom is generally a framed room with high performance double paned insulated glass and a zoned/dedicated heating and cooling system.

Why Choose a Sunroom:

More people are staying in their homes longer and homes need to change to fit their needs.

  1. People may desire to enjoy the outdoors for longer period of time through the year. Special area created for entertainment, exercise, home office, spa or relaxation, or expanded kitchen or family room
  2. Typically less expensive than traditional room additions and takes less time to construct
  3. Allows additional light into a home
  4. Sunrooms can often be built where conventional additions can’t be because of building codes and zoning ordinances that restrict backyard additions. A sunroom isn’t considered a square footage addition to your home.  It is considered a patio addition.

Considerations For Your Sunroom:

  • You may want to separate your sunroom from the rest of the house with a door to maximize privacy and energy efficiency
  • Full glass windows gives room a more outdoor feel
  • Blinds or tinted glass may be needed in a sunny climate
  • Size of room desired – make sure it accomplishes what you want for your lifestyle
  • Product specifications must meet local weather requirements and local building codes
  • Low E tempered glass and self cleaning glass for better insulation, safety and ease of maintenance
  • How Sunrooms Differ from Room Additions:

Most room additions are comprised of:

  • Primarily wood, masonry and other materials that usually costs more than a typical sunroom.
  • Most of the area of a sunroom is covered by screen or glass and can be constructed of wood, aluminum or vinyl.
