Landscape Insights

Homeowners today are expanding the indoors to outdoors. They are developing attractive and comfortable living spaces in their yards and landscaping decisions are reflecting those trends.

Some current landscaping trends include:

Simple and low maintenance are words many landscapers are hearing. Many homeowners today are short on time and want simple, low maintenance landscaping. Homeowners are increasingly more likely to hire professionals for weeding, mulching or mowing.

Homeowners want yards that reflect their style and personality. They use their yards for entertaining and relaxing with family and friends. Often a variety of plants can reflect a homeowner’s style.

Four seasons of color is the new trend. In particular, mass plantings of colors that blend together throughout the various seasons. Homeowners are looking to achieve four seasons of color and introduce new varieties of seasonal flowers and foliage.

Bigger is better. Homeowners want to change things “now”. They are not willing to wait for small plants to grow. They want to make an immediate impact on their outdoor areas.

Outdoor furnishings, accessories, and ornaments are popular. Homeowners are adding enhancements such as gazebos, pergolas, pools, fountains, sculptures, high-end barbeques and high-end patio and pool furniture.

Homeowners are living and gardening in smaller spaces — on decks, patios and balconies. Our need to garden is growing, making trailing plants that can grow up a trellis or a fence or cascade over a balcony or wall popular choices. Plantings that provide privacy are in demand and container gardening is also growing in popularity.

Environmentally friendly gardens are in and this trend grows more every year. People don’t want to use as many chemicals and also want to conserve water.  More native and drought resistant plants are being used and chemical fertilizers are being replaced by natural options. Rain gardens are good examples of a natural presentation.

Exterior lighting is growing in popularity
. Homeowners want to extend the enjoyment of outdoor spaces into after-dark hours. Hard-wired lighting is now illuminating more gardens, trees and nighttime activities while enhancing security. LED and rope lighting are low energy ways to illuminate the yard.
