Granite: Making It Look The Best It Can

Granite is one of the toughest materials you will ever put in your home,” says Luis Fardin, Co-Owner of the Granite Shop of Madison.  “Its hardness and durability is really shown when hot pans are set directly on it or if you cut directly on the surface.  And, even though there are a few granites that can be damaged and the finish can be dulled or harmed, the large majority of granites can stand up to cutting easily. Granite will endure because of its inherent durability.”  Caring for granite will help maintain its good looks for the life of your home.

Factors to consider:

? Seams are a special adhesive
? Dark colored granite shows seams more — lighter colored granite seams are less noticeable.
? Movement in the granite can disguise the seams, making them less noticeable.
? Be sure the countertop is prepared correctly — there should be multiple grinding and polishing steps
used in preparing you countertop.
? Always clean with neutral cleaner, granite cleaners or other non abrasive cleaners.
? Never use ammonia (or cleaner such as Windex) — it removes the sealant protecting the granite.

Granite doesn’t need a great deal of care or maintenance.  If you choose correctly and don’t abuse it, you should have great performance and looks for a long time.

When polished and maintained correctly, granite will look great and last as long as the homeowner  chooses.
